Thursday Morning Meditation 12/9/2010

We meditated today with a Pittsburgh yogini leading meditation over Google Talk and it came through perfectly. After the meditation we listened to "Kundalini Chadi Badhi Jaye", an original qawwali from Rajiv Bagadadhe and Pune Collectivity, which conveys the journey through the chakras in the manner of the sufis. Original songs by Sahaja Yoga artistes were instrumental in many of us youngsters to understand the important concepts of attaining yoga in the sahaja manner - and these compositions acted to convey the abtract concepts of surrender and instrospection in a manner no discussion or question/answer could.

Nepali Bhajan: Maharagi Maharagi

A beautiful bhajan from Nepal Sahaja Yogis

Maharagyi Maharagyi Dharti Ma orlin Maharagyi

Maharagyi landed down on the earth

Shiva priya Shiva Priya Chitta ma aayin Shiva Priya

Shiva priya settled into the Chitta

(Maharagyi and Shiva Priya are two of many names of Shri Mataji)

Gulab jal le nuhayera mehandi racheko

Having bathed with rose water, she has put on Mehandi

*(Gulaab jal is a Hindi word too, ‘nuhayera’ means ‘naha kar’ in Hindi –Shri Mataji’s photograph is cleaned with gulaab jal)

(* Mehandi racheko means: ‘Mehandi rachi hui’)

Laligurans rang ko pahiran, attar chhareko

Having dressed in the color of rhododendron, she has sprayed fragrance or perfume

*(Laligurans: Rododendron is the national flower of Nepal, its color is scarlet: kind of deep red)

*(Attar is a hindi word too)

Mangala dhuna ma sangeet gai, Nirmala Mata ko aarti utaraun

Lets sing music in Mangala dhun (tune) and perform aarti to Nirmala Mata

Maharagyi

Suun ko pauju, suun kai chura, suunai ko chha Haara

Having worn Golden pauju, golden bangle and golden necklace

*(‘pauju’ – ‘anklet’)

*(Chura – is like ‘chudi’ in Hindi, and Haara – is like haar in Hindi)

Manik ratna jadiyeka aabhusan saaraa

She has put on dresses attached with pearls and gems

*(For the word Manikratna: I think this word is applicable in Hindi too. It’s like Mani + Ratna, so I used ‘pearls and gems’.)

*(Jadiyeko means: ‘jada huwa’, and aabhusan is a common word, i.e. dress)

Mangala dhuna ma...

Maanawa rup li aadishakti dharti ma aayin

Having incarnated in the form of human being, adishakti shakti came down to the earth.

(Hindi sentence would be: Maanawa rup le kar aadi shakti dharti mein aayi hain

Devalok ko sara shakti dharti ma fijayin

And she spread all the powers of heaven on earth.

Mangala dhuna ma…

Maharagyi…

How does the brain responds to Sahaja Meditation?

The following informative page answers questions on how the brain responds to Sahaja meditation. It's calming effect can be seen from the brain activation patters observed via EEG. Here is an extract. Go here for the full article.

Electrophysiological studies (EEG) measure the electrical activity from groups of neurons on the surface of the scalp. EEG studies comparing the brain activation of long-term Sahaja Yoga practitioners (11) to short-term Sahaja Yoga meditators (16) found specific brain activation patterns corresponding to the subjective feelings of thoughtless awareness and happiness experienced by the Meditators (Aftanas and Golocheikine, 2001, 2002, 2000). In their EEG measures, the long-term meditators showed increased power in low band frequency EEG activity of theta and alpha, which was particularly pronounced over the left frontal regions.
